The design of my shoe stand is based on the ones displayed at Wanamaker's department store in New York, circa 1915. The store, at 9th and Broadway was called 'the shoppers paradise' and its shoe department lived up to this distinction. It also solved a peculiar problem. because of modesty reasons, shoes had not yet been conspicuously tried on in public until the early 1900s. The ambiance of the 'shoe salon' and beautiful displays to won the confidence of customers. The quest for fashion overcame Victorian notions of modesty, specifically the covering of ankles and feet. Wanamaker's was a master of merchandising and their graceful pedestal stands assuredly sold plenty of shoes.
