Shelley's comments: Sinuous, meandering lines characterize the essentially feminine imagery of the art nouveau aesthetic. Lasting a brief period of time, between 1895 and 1915, its influence on all decorative arts established the Art Nouveau style as a recognized design movement. Originally intended as a rebellion against industrial mass produced products, the design practitioners of the "new art" created items that were largely hand made, one at a time. Form and beauty of an item was deemed more valuable than the intrinsic worth of its materials.
